JEROME – Wednesday, March 8, FFA had their speaking Career Development Events (CDE). Filer, Kimberly, Hansen, Castleford, and Jerome came to compete in the Parliamentary Procedure, Extemporaneous and Prepared Public Speaking competitions.
In Extemporaneous Speaking, 4 members drew three topics and chose one to prepare a 4-6 minute speech. They were given 30 minutes to plan this speech before giving it to a panel of judges. They were then questioned for five minutes about their topic and different areas pertaining to their speech. Alyssa Hansten and Cody Jackson of Jerome placed second and first, respectively.
Public Speaking required the 3 members to prepare a 6-8 minute speech before arriving at the contest on a topic of their choosing. After presenting, they were asked questions for 3 minutes about their speech and topic. Jerome’s Kaitlin Mirkin placed first.
Finally, in Parliamentary Procedure, 2 teams of 6 members “ran a meeting” according to Robert’s Rules of Orders, making 2 different motions and 3 debates per person. The teams also took a 25 question test about the procedures in a meeting. Jerome placed first, with both High Chair and High Secretary being Cody Jackson and Kaitlin Mirkin, respectively.
Despite the belief that FFA is strictly farming, these three competitions prove that FFA is also focused to create motivated leaders for the future of, not only agriculture, but the nation.
State for these competitions will be at the State Leadership Conference, April 5-8, at CSI in Twin Falls.
