Not only did Jerome host State Speech, but they also crushed the competition yet again, receiving their 17th State Championship for 4A. Head coach Scott Burton has been the speech coach in Jerome for the last 20 years; out of those 20 years he’s clenched 17 state championships. Assistant coach Trevor Churchman said that even after all these years, the speech team “shows no sign of slowing down.”
Burton said, “Working hard and winning never gets old. Once it does, then it’s time to get out.” Not only did the T-Wolves crush the 4A competition but they also “clobbered all the competition…43 schools competed and we were the top scoring school by a long way,” announced Burton.
There are a lot of different categories to compete or perform in. One way the team tackles the large number of categories is by selecting leaders of each category. Their job is to direct, help its members and to check in with Burton or President Isabella Birnie.
Even with multiple tactics the team faced some challenges. Radio and Humorous interpretation captain Rory Olsen shared the same frustrations with other captains, seniors and team members. Olsen said, “Because of the change to semesters and all of the snow days, we lost a lot of time to rehearse and find our pieces. As a senior and category leader, there was even more pressure-this would be my last chance to compete, and I had to represent both the category but also the team.” However even with the challenges the team faced, each category leader felt the same thing. They felt that each of their categories were extremely talented and they were proud of the way their group performed at districts.
The last time Jerome hosted State was in 2004. Burton felt that “hosting state was a huge undertaking. Not only do you have to schedule rooms but you have to provide entertainment, catering, little extras; basically, you are running the show.”
Jerome’s 2017 State Speech was nothing close to Jerome’s 2004 State Speech. Burton said that this year was a lot more involved. He said the difference this year was that they made it an “EVENT rather than just a speech competition.”
One of the team’s goals was to show other schools “everything Jerome has to offer” including the school, the team, and the community. Churchman applauds Burton in his “ceaselessly and selflessly to provide a memorable experience for all the competitors, judges, coaches and spectators which naturally required more attention and thus resulted in less time available for the team itself.”
However, Churchman felt that the team did not fall short. He said, “I was impressed and proud to see our team react to those complications with aplomb and self-sufficient attitudes while they took charge, rallied around one another and gracefully won another State championship.”
Jerome brought the heat to the state tournament when they qualified 40 entries. They then sealed the deal at state in many categories when placing 6th to State champion. Jerome’s state champion in Oratorical Analysis was Nathan Nordquist. When asked about becoming a state champion Nathan said that he was extremely humbled by the award and couldn’t have imagined becoming a state champion! Burton stated that “Nate is a natural. Watching Nate evolve as a speaker and competitor was a lot of fun. The verbal jousting, we had along the way was entertaining and his vernacular is quite impressive. Once we got him in the mold, he flourished. The kid is crazy talented. “
Jerome’s T-Wolves are excited to complete next year, gain new members and hopefully clench another State Title.
