It’s the beginning of November. The weather is getting colder, the end of the first semester is fast approaching, and Thanksgiving will be arriving soon, but that’s not the only thing that is happening. This month is National Native American Heritage Month.

Also called American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month, it celebrates the American Indians that served in the United States military and their culture. They helped the Americans in the Revolutionary War and current wars in the Middle East.  They also have a National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC that runs from January 21, 2017 through January 2018.

This heritage month began in 1990 with an edict and proclamation from the forty-third president, George H. W. Bush.

National Native American Heritage Month might not be as recognized as other national celebrations, but it’s still a very important day to celebrate all the American and Alaskan Native Americans that helped us in our time in need.
