Wood River Cancels Again

Jerome- This week on October 6, 2020, Wood River cancelled games against Jerome High School again. These past weeks Wood River has cancelled all sports. When asked why Wood River keeps canceling, the athletic director Kevin Stilling said, ¨We (Wood River) just have different policies and perspectives. Definitely more strict than other districts. We go by the metrics from Harvard Global Health Institute.¨

Wood River has now cancelled 7 Varsity football games, 11 girls Varsity soccer games, 10 boys Varsity soccer games, and 8 Varsity volleyball games. This includes the girls and boys soccer games and the volleyball game they cancelled on the 6th according to Wood River’s website. Stilling said ¨The athletes and coaches try to stay positive even though they feel frustrated and upset.¨

When asked how he feels about Wood River, the Jerome High School girls Varsity soccer coach Robert Garcia said, ¨I as a coach can understand why because of everything with covid-19. We wish they would be able to play but things come up and for the safety of the players it’s okay.¨

As mentioned earlier, Wood River uses the Harvard Global Health Institute to determine the potential Covid risks. Wood River determined whether they will compete or not based on a live map updated by the Harvard Global Health Institute. Their risk level map labels counties as green, yellow, orange, or red based on the number of new daily cases. A county is in green if they have had less than one case per 100,000 people. A yellow Covid risk level means there are 1 to 9 cases per 100,000 people. In orange Covid risk level is 10 to 24 cases per 100,000 people and also a stay at home order is advised. A red Covid risk level means there are 25 or more cases per 100,000 people and a stay at home order is necessary.

According to the Harvard Global Health Institute, Idaho currently has no counties in green. Jerome County is currently red with 27.5 daily cases per 100,000 people. Blaine County is currently orange with only 16.1 daily cases per 100,000 people. According to Blaineschools.org, green and yellow statuses means they play, orange and red they cancel. This applies to Blaine county and whatever county they might be playing in.

Jerome´s last Varsity football game is going to be against Wood River on October 23. If that game was today, it would be cancelled due to Jerome’s red Covid risk level based on the Harvard Global Health Institute. However, the Jerome School District, as well as the rest of the state of Idaho minus Blaine County, use the South Central Public Health District´s county risk levels.  Based on this data, Jerome County is in yellow for risk, if Blaine County followed this risk assessment, the game would be played. Due to Blaine County canceling so many games, the Jerome Tigers were proactive and moved the Senior night early.
