Minico- Last Friday the Jerome football team faced off against the Spartans at Minico. The now 5-2 Tigers won their 5th game in a row, coming away with a win against the Spartans with a score of 13-3. Although Jerome’s offense struggled to finish, fumbling the ball three times, the defense was able to hold the usually high scoring Minico to only 3 points.

Minico scored first, with a 30 yard field goal in the first quarter. They however did not have much success offensively after this. Minico likes to run the ball, which was especially prevalent this game as they had a very few passing yards for the game and 177 rushing yards. Therefore, Jerome had to shut them down close up, which they did. Matching the Spartans physicality on the line and stopping their run game. The Tigers defense had an impressive night. The line did an exceptional job, Blake Poulson and Joe Stevenson both sacked the quarterback, Jacob West intercepted the ball, and JW James led the team in tackles. Overall, the whole defense played very well through the whole game. When asked about his thoughts on the game and his defense, Jerome defensive coordinator Logan Horrocks said “ Minco has a really good offense and the fact that we kept them down to three points is really remarkable. The D line did really well, the linebackers filled well, and our DBs did really well too; it was really just a whole defensive effort.”

Jerome scored all of their 13 points in the 4th quarter. Shaylor Bingham and Gavin Capps each scored a touchdown. Bingham led the team offensively with 139 receiving yards. All though Jerome was able to come close to scoring multiple times, fumbles and turnovers got the worst of them.

Jerome football has not seen success in past years, but these last two years they have started to do well. Beating rival Twin Falls twice in a row and now beating Minico, who always has a solid team and who the Tigers have not beaten in recent years. A Jerome football fan who attended the game said “ It’s exciting to see the team finally do something and get some wins.” The Jerome Tigers have had a successful season so far, losing only to Gooding and the undefeated Kimberly Bulldogs.
