Music to Mr. Fukuoka

Mr. Fukuoka is the music teacher here at Jerome High School. We asked him a couple questions about his classes and about himself, here’s what he said.  Why he wanted to become a music teacher and he said ¨ Everybody in my family played the piano because that’s something my mom believed in and in middle school i played the trumpet back then when i was in band and then one day in class I was like you know i want to do what my director was doing.¨ Then we asked him how long has he been a music teacher and he said ¨ let’s see this is my 8th year.¨ We also asked him what bumps in the road he had to overcome and he said ¨ I guess there’s bumps in the road everywhere but I think the biggest thing is you go through college as a music major and plan to teach but then when you are in actual school teaching there are so many things you don’t learn in classes so you kinda have to figure out funding, class dynamis, problem solving, or discipline all those things are important for functioning music program and I think those are the biggest bumps is that reacting to situations that i didn’t even think about so I like to do my best.¨

Then we asked him why he thought in his opinion why music is important to the world and he said ¨ music is important because wherever you are in the world or what culture it’s not a great term but how civilized people are it doesn’t matter music is everywhere, people connect with music emotionally and socially so using music as part of education really prepares students to become well rounded and appreciate more cultures and what a lot of different genres are so they can find their niche.¨ We asked him how can does music give off certain emotion and he replied ¨ I guess we can go into how does music sound angry but if we do that we can go into it on how it is constructed but the great thing about music is the people listening to it doesnt need to know that because if they hear some type of angry music they will hear it and even if your not angry and you listen to that type of music you can feel it so I guess if you want to create those kinds of sounds you can experiment those sounds but how does it affect us it is engraved in all of us it could be a baby crying because when a baby starts to cry we all get certain emotion associated with that so people naturally have a response toward a sound. ¨ Then we asked him what makes music considered ¨good¨ and he said ¨ there is different definition of good cause we all have different taste I don’t like that there is a separation of academic music and popular music because its been like that for many years, on the academic side you can use Taylor Swift as an example and people can say they don’t like her music because it’s too simple and it’s not structurally sound but then you hear it from the other side and you go well i dont understand whats going on in this academic music because music is organized by sound but i can relate more to the taylor swift song because i think that is good music.¨
