Indianapolis- On March 18, 2021, the famous basketball tournament March Madness will be starting. March Madness has been an important part of basketball history for a long time. It started in 1939 in Evanston, Illinois when the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) held a tournament for college basketball teams. The tournament starts off with 68 men’s college basketball teams, then teams start playing against each other and in the first round four teams are eliminated. There is also a March Madness tournament for women’s college basketball teams too. They start off with eliminating four out of the 64 teams, which will start on March 21. Some of the colleges that play in March Madness include UCLA, Duke, Villinova, Uconn, North Carolina, Indiana, Kansas and Kentucky. That’s only eight out of 68. March Madness is definitely a long process of elimination, but many people enjoy watching every game that is played.
Last year, March Madness was cancelled due to the Coronavirus. But this year the NCAA is letting a limited number of fans to go and watch the basketball games. According to Vox, “Arenas will be at as much as 25 percent capacity for the men’s games and 17 percent for the women’s, with masks, social distancing, and testing requirements in place for all games.” Also the NCAA stated that, “In conjunction with state and local health authorities the number one priority for decisions around the tournament continues to be the safety and well-being of everyone participating in the event.” The NCAA also has stated that along with the safety protocols, they said their “Mask Madness” program will help donate a ton of masks to people in Indiana to help encourage health and safety use.
Even though March Madness has changed because of the Coronavirus, it’ll definitely be better than last year when we didn’t get a March Madness tournament.
