Why are Old Video Games still Popular?

Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, and Pokemon Red/Blue. Why are these games still popular two decades after they were released? Well, nostalgia is an obvious factor, but they’re also better for speedrunning.

Speedrunning is when players attempt to finish a game, level, boss, etc. as fast as possible. Why are older games used for speedrunning? The age of these games is appealing because players have had more time to discover secrets and glitches. Those glitches are also less likely to be fixed or patched out because the games are older. Mario Kart Wii has been thoroughly dissected by players who are looking for glitches to exploit.

How do people pick games to speedrun in the first place? Most of the games are childhood classics, and if people are already invested in a game, they’ll spend more time on it. Honestly, who doesn’t want to revisit a part of their childhood. The type of nostalgia people get from video games is beautiful. That’s why older games are still popular, players get to relive a part of their past and experience parts of the game they didn’t get to experience before.
