There are at least 82 people dead in a massive hospital fire on Saturday night in Iraq’s capital city of Baghdad, Major General Khaled Al-Muhanna the Iraqi Interior Ministry said Sunday, 110 people were injured in the blaze at Ibn al-Khatib Hospital. The fire is believed to have started after oxygen tanks exploded, according to two health officials at the hospital.

Murtadha Riyadh, a resident of Baghdad, was in the hospital picking up medicine when he heard the explosion. grandmother and aunt were both on the hospital’s second floor when the fire erupted. Health workers were only and civil defense teams were only able to at least save 200 people including patients. At least 28 victims were being treated for Covid-19, But neither Riyadhs grandmother or aunt were among the survivors. Riyadh had told CNN that both his grandmother and aunt died of suffocation

Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi has said that $6,800 will be given to family members of each victim.He has also ordered the suspension of Health Minister Hassan al-Tamimi and Baghdad Governor Mohammed al-Atta during an emergency session with his cabinet Sunday. The two will be questioned in connection to the hospital fire, according to a statement released by al-Kadhimi’s office. According to a Health Ministry statement the civil defence team are still investigating the cause of the fire. The investigation should be completed within five days, and a report to be submitted to the Council of Ministers.

So many people lost their lives in a hospital due to an explosion. The explosion could have been intentional or by accident. We won’t know what really happened until the investigation is complete.
